Examples of research and consulting projects in language assessment and acquisition:
- In January 2004, Graybridge Malkam was awarded a contract by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to analyse the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) recruitment needs, create assessment tools covering
the four language competencies and develop language training curriculum guidelines for immigrants interested in a policing career. At the inception of the project, an advisory committee consisting
of OPS representatives, immigrant community representatives, Ontario Provincial Police representatives and Graybridge Malkam’s team members was established in order to observe the delivery
of the project. The project included:
- Needs analysis.
- Identification of resources.
- Development of assessment tools, curriculum, training material, promotional brochure and database.
- From 1998 to 2003, Graybridge Malkam led a Language Assessment for Learning project funded by Human Resources Development Canada. This project included:
- Design and development of the language testing tool and interpretation of appropriate testing protocols for workplace and skills training English language requirements, based on the Canadian
Language Benchmarks for speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- Administration and interpretation of language assessments, and evaluation and modification of assessment tools and process.
- In 2002, Graybridge Malkam was awarded the contract to complete a research project with Language Training Canada. The research project aimed to review the English language program materials
Interface Canada and the French program materials Programme de base de francais au travail for cultural bias. The project included the following steps:
- Design of criteria for the identification of bias in terms of language and cultural inferences.
- A review for potential biases in the provision of English and French language instruction for non-native speakers of either language.
- The identification of specific aspects and sections of the texts requiring revision.
- The recommendations for the inclusion of new situations, examples or statements where required.
